This is the first post in a series I am working on to document the vacuum sealed meals I send with my husband on his annual archery elk hunting trip. These would work great for any backpacker or camper who wants to carry light and nutritionally dense foods that only requires hot water. So... let’s start with breakfast! My husband is pretty simple with it comes to his oatmeal. He likes brown sugar, a pinch of salt, walnuts and raisins or dates. Others with different tastes could add in cinnamon, other nuts like pecans or slivered almonds, or freeze dried blueberries. I also include in some powdered milk or buttermilk to give it a creamy texture and add fat and calories for energy. With the powdered milk you have to be careful that it doesn’t end up in a clump or it will compact so tightly it will remain a lump even after the water is added. I should also add that I do store the powdered milk in the fridge, so I would not recommend making these a long time in advance of your trip since there is moisture in the powdered milk and you don’t want it to spoil after it is packaged. I make them about a week ahead usually and store in a cool place. Another option would be to bring mini shelf stable creamers. Breakfast Oatmeal: 3/4c oatmeal, quick cook or instant Pinch salt 1Tbs milk powder 1.5 Tbs brown sugar 1/4c walnuts 1/4c raisins I find it’s easiest to work in a very large mixing bowl to make less of a mess and be able to do several at a time. Vacuum seal and you’re good to go! Use a larger package with room for water if you plan to eat it directly in the vacuum seal bag or if you have a bowl you prefer to eat out of you can use quite small packages as seen in the photo below.
At camp just use your jet boil or kettle to add hot water until it’s the consistency you like!
