I thought I would share my holiday planters with you! A couple years ago I went to a craft store the day after Christmas and bought a bunch of dogwood, berries and poinsettias half off to use in my planters. They aren't meant for exterior use but they hold up well-enough to get a few years out of. I am very lucky to have a source for spruce tips but I believe these usually go for about $10 a bundle. I start by putting the tallest ones in the pots and then fill in around them, using the small ones and trimmings for the window boxes. I left dirt in them this year and used a big screwdriver to poke holes in where I wanted to put each stem. I then filled in with the dogwood and berries in the pots and the poinsettias in the window boxes. Odd numbers work best for symmetry. I cut the dried hydrangea from my front plants and I do those last because they're so delicate. You can also spray them with hairspray to help protect them. (Thanks for the tip Aunt Patsy!) Sammy and the Chix enjoying the sunshine! ... Now for the inside of the house!
