Yes I am a DIY kind of girl, but typically I leave beauty products to the professionals. Until I heard about flax seed gel and thought I would give it a whirl. Here's why you should too: it's cheap, easy, and it works better than anything I have found so far for defining my curls and adding protein and shine to my hair. Buy whole flax seeds. There are both brown and golden. Either is fine. I found these at Trader Joe's. Ok. So here's how:Into a pot add 2Tbs and 1 cup water. Turn on higher and stir consistently to avoid seeds sticking to the bottom. Once it bubbles it needs about 7-10 mins. It will be slightly thick and gelatinous but it will thicken more when it cools. Put cheese cloth or an old stocking over a bowl or Pyrex. After your 7-10 minutes of bubbles and a little white froth at the top, pour into your strainer cloth. Let cool. Either at room temp for a while or if you're in a hurry you can pop into the fridge or freezer for 10-15 minutes. Once it's cool enough to handle you can add a couple drops of your favorite essential oils to make it smell nice and then squeeze it through the strainer. You can save the seeds in the freezer for a second use if you choose. And transfer into a jar or squeeze bottle for use! It will keep about a week or two in the fridge but if you want to make a larger batch you can freeze it in ice cube trays and thaw a cube or two at a time. Distribute through wet hair very well and diffuse! Once they're dry use a little sweet almond oil right on "scrunch out the crunch" and enjoy your light, defined, and shiny curls! I can't remember the last time my hair was shiny!!
