Another hunt/camp meal that is a favorite is taco rice. This one is super light and easy to toss in your pack if you want to take it for lunch or if you need something light to pack if you’re camping as you hike and hunt. The other bonus is that this one is pretty customizable depending on what protein you like or have access to since we all love different things in our tacos! I start with minute rice and add in seasonings and protein. Taco rice: 1c minute rice 2T bell peppers 2/3c freeze dried chicken or other protein (freeze dried beef chunks or ground beef works great here too, beans would be good too if you can find precooked freeze dried ones) 2 tsp taco seasoning If you don’t have access to freeze dried meat (I just ordered a big can on Amazon) you could do just the rice and veggies and bring a packet of “canned” chicken in a pouch but it does weigh more). In the photo below you’ll see I put the rice and protein in first. Then we add the seasoning. You shouldn’t need to add salt because the taco mix is really salty. But it’s never a bad idea to have a little salt packet with you in case you want to add some after it’s cooked. A little packet of hot sauce is also a great add. Then I add the dried bell peppers. If you like corn you could also add in freeze dried corn or even a few tablespoons of a dried mixed vegetable soup. And vacuum seal on gentle dry. That way it doesn’t push so hard on the bag and risk rice poking through the bag.
When you add hot water you just need to cover it and then roll the top over and clip it so it can steep in the bag. My husband brings a little chip clip with him on the trip to hold the bag closed while it cooks. It’ll take about five minutes. I hope you enjoy!
